Organizer: Terauchi, Naoko; Panelist: Hee-suokmin | Diau-long Shen

Paper Title: International Exchange of Traditional Music in the Postwar period East Asia

Abstract:

This panel will discuss international exchange and transformation of traditional music in East Asia after WWII. Recently, cross-border collaborative discussions on intellectual or artistic exchange between US and East Asian countries or among East Asian counties in before-, inter-, and post-war periods are quite active (Kawashima et al.2022). The study on the exchange of music, however, is still in the beginning stage of development. This panel will focus on the international exchange of ‘traditional (classical) music’ of the East and the West in the post war period and explores what cultural or diplomatic role each music played in events and what impact the events gave to music and people or parties concerned. Three panelists will present case studies of musical exchanges between US and Korea, US and East Asia, and US/Europe and Japan and also talk what theoretical framework or approach is needed for the further development of the studies of this field.
