College of Music, NTNU
In response to the global trend, the overall transformation plan of National Taiwan Normal University toward cultural and artistic formation, and the fusion of tradition and innovation, the Department of Music (founded in June 1946), the Graduate Institute of Ethnomusicology (August 2002), the Graduate Institute of Performing Arts (August 2005) and the Music Digital Archive Center (September 2004) were integrated into the College of Music in August 2007, with new programs including the Digital Video and Audio Program and the Undergraduate Program of Performing Arts.
The Department of Music offers bachelor, master and doctoral degrees and is dedicated to the cultivation of performing and creative artists, researchers and educators. The Graduate Institute of Ethnomusicology consists of two divisions, “Research and Heritage” and “Multimedia Applications” with special focus on music research, dissemination of traditional music, digital archiving and applied music. The Graduate Institute of Performing Arts trains professional personnel in theater performance and arts administration and management with the focus on music.
Taiwan Music Institute
Taiwan Music Institute (TMI) is a national institution dedicated to preserving, researching, and promoting Taiwan’s music. Established in January 2002, the Institute was formerly known as the Research Institute of Musical Heritage(民族音樂研究所)and later the Taiwan Music Center(臺灣音樂中心). It was officially renamed the Taiwan Music Institute in 2012 and operates under the National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA), an agency of the Ministry of Culture.
Location and Facilities
Located within the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center in Taipei’s Shilin District,the Institute offers a dedicated space for research, reading, listening, and viewing, with its music archives housed on the second floor.
Collections
The Institute holds over 50,000 items, including books, audiovisual content,and digital resources. Its collection focuses on the traditional music of Taiwan’s diverse ethnic communities and features significant artifacts from prominent Taiwanese musicians, along with materials from Asian, Pacific, and world music traditions. Research and Digital Resources.Through long-term field research and academic projects, the Institute has accumulated valuable primary sources on Taiwan’s music. More than 20,000 archival items have been digitized, with ongoing efforts to expand online access and research use.
Public Access
Open to the public, the Institute welcomes visitors and offers guided tours in Mandarin and English by prior reservation, inviting audiences to explore Taiwan’s rich and diverse music heritage.
National Center for Traditional Arts
The National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA), located in Yilan, is affiliated with the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan (R.O.C.). It was created as Taiwan's first national institution dedicated to traditional and folk arts under government planning. Its missions include the cultivation of talent in traditional arts, research, preservation, development, innovation, and the intergenerational transmission of intangible cultural heritage.
With its four affiliated units: Taiwan Music Institute, GuoGuang Opera Company, Taiwan BangZi Opera Company and National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan, NCFTA has gained international recognition, enhancing the influence and visibility of Taiwanese traditional arts globally and serving as an important bridge for cultural exchange.
GuoGuang Opera Company
Theater flows through history and unfolds across the years. Peking Opera integrates the best of various traditional opera forms; after two centuries of refinement, it has become an invaluable treasure of contemporary cultural heritage. Founded in 1995, the Guoguang Opera Company is currently under affiliation with the National Center for Traditional Arts. In addition to continuously exploring new thematic possibilities for its productions, Guoguang actively expands its performance spaces. Rooted in the foundation of delivering exceptional plays, the company comprehensively promotes traditional opera to every corner of society. Furthermore, it has been frequently invited to perform internationally in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Russia, and Singapore. In terms of arts education and promotion, through public performances, tours, theatrical workshops, and demonstration lectures, the company provides accessible, diverse, refined, and lifestyle-integrated artistic activities.
