Paper Title: A Literary Motif’s Musical Interpretations: On the Origins and Evolution of the Qin Piece “Dialogue Between the Fisherma

Abstract:

The fisherman and the woodcutter constitute a classic motif in traditional
Chinese literature, appearing extensively across different periods, literary
genres, and fields. The Qin piece Dialogue Between the Fisherman and the
Woodcutter is a prominent musical expression of this motif. Most qin manuals
interpret the piece as embodying an eremitic ideal, using the imagined dialogue
between the two figures to contemplate the rise and fall of dynasties, conveying
a detached, philosophical perspective on history. Descriptions often emphasize
its "refined and lofty" aesthetic, aligning with conventional literary readings of
the motif as representing reclusion from worldly affairs. However, alternative
interpretations complicate this understanding. The piece was once
titled Awaiting the Dawn at the Golden Gate(金門待漏), with some commentaries
lamenting the struggles of official life. The lyrics in the Chongxiu Zhenchuan Qin
script (重修真傳琴譜) further introduce a layer of political engagement, with lines
like "One day, if encountered by a wise ruler, I’ll ride to the capital to counsel
peace," suggesting Confucian idealism rather than Daoist withdrawal. Moreover,
the vernacular style of the lyrics and the quasi-theatrical structure of the dialogue
indicate that the musical rendition may not conform to the expected "refined and
lofty" aesthetic, instead reflecting popular or performative influences. What was
the true nature of this piece in history? To what extent do the versions people
listen to and perform today resonate with ancient traditions? This paper aims to
trace the development and evolution of the Fisherman and Woodcutter allusion
in literary history, examine the possible timeframe of its entry into the musical
realm, and explore the impact of the evolution of this specific motif on the
development of this Qin piece.
